Jennifer LehrerUtica Community Schools art teacher Jennifer Lehrer has been appointed to a countywide arts leadership position.

Lehrer, who teaches at Collins Elementary, was appointed to the Macomb County Art Institute authority by Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and confirmed by the Board of Commissioners.

The Authority consists of seven members and is responsible for levying the millage approved by voters for the Detroit Institute of Arts.  It is also responsible for overseeing the benefits to Macomb County residents, such as providing feedback to student curriculum development, senior programs and community collaboration.

“I was honored to be considered for this opportunity and I’m excited to learn more and educate the community to all the DIA offers,” Lehrer said. “My goal is to promote the DIA and its offerings to the community. Specifically, I want to share how educators can benefit from the programs. I met with many people from the DIA last week and had some great conversations about how UCS partners with the DIA and how we can potentially work with other teachers districts.”

Lehrer is deeply committed to the community. She is a graduate of Utica Community Schools, and has taught art in UCS for 25 years. She has been part of the Collins Elementary positive behavior for more than eight years.

"I love being able to get to know my students as they progress through the years," she said. "I’ve had many that have come back for visits or even recognized me out in the community and stopped me to say hello and catch up."
